Week One: Analysing existing examples

I found some existing examples of posters and illustrations that were relative to the topics in which I have to choose from in the brief. This advanced me in my project by enabling me to see how other designers have gone about presenting the topic and also drawing on the emotion of the viewers.

Notes: The techniques of Anaphora  and possessive pronouns are used within this poster, where the repetition of 'Fight for it, work for it' is the anaphora and 'it's our flag,' where 'our' is the pronoun is a possessive pronoun. The technique of possessive pronoun makes it direct to the audience, where it speaks to you directly, this makes this seem more personal. The technique of the anaphora, where repetition is used implants the phrase into the audiences head and helps them to remember what is being said. It is these techniques that aid in the persuasion of the poster. The fundamental design principles for this poster are colour, where they are quite dark and gloomy shades. Balance is used, where the type is above and below the man picture, also very centered. Size is another principle utilised, where the picture of the flag is the dominating component of the poster, giving it importance.

Notes:This poster has very direct in its message, where if i was to use the same kind of concept for inspiration for my poster, I could have a new flag being put up and the old flag flying away. Again the colours are very dull and almost washed out in this poster, where this gives a feeling of an historic-ness to it, which can a further give historic credibility. Fundamental design principles such as direction, are used where the illustration is designed in a triangle shape, where the top of the flagpole is the focal point, and the point of the triangle. Our eyes are directed straight to the focal point.

Notes: I like this poster design, where the hands grabbing, in the context of the topic in this brief, could be seen as money hungry or greediness for spending money on something that doesn't need to be changed. The colour palette is very simple, two-coloured which is minimalist and kept sharp which looks very resolved.

Notes: A fundamental design process that has been used here is perspective and how the flag is photographed or illustrated from a low angle, this makes it seem as though the flag is above us and we are looking up at it. This portrays dominance. In relation to our topic, this could be the British flag, which conveys the idea that they are dominating our current flag when really we should be individual/independent.

Notes: This can be seen as homage, if I were to take this very iconic stance/photo and replace the flag and body copy it could easily reflect either side of the Flag topic. You could even look at this from the perspective of working together to achieve something, like how the soldiers are working together to put the flag up, I could use a picture of a Maori chief and captain cook to say that the two cultures should work together to create a flag that represents both.

Notes: I find that this photography works really effectively as a parody, where it mocks the idea that everything in America is made in china.  The same concept could be used within the Flag change where I could use the New Zealand flag and say underneath it 'made in Britain'
