Week One: In class task of analysing works

In today's class we analysed a set of works chosen by the lecturer, where we looked at the ihi and the wihi of the work and how that was portrayed by the visual elements within it, where these had an effect on how we interpret the piece emotionally.

We also looked at strategies that the creater of the posters use within their poster, which were explained during our initial presentation in the Pit earlier.

Juxtaposition
the pairing of two elements to create contrast and ideas
Subversion
the addition/subtraction or manipulation of an existing element to introduce a new idea
Parody
an imitation of a
style that mocks rather than celebrates
Satire
the use of irony, humour, sarcasm to expose an issue
Pastiche
An imitation of a style that celebrates, rather than mocks.
Homage
Using a style in a manner that clearly acknowledges

the original

My group analysed set A from stream, as follows.

Notes: We found that this used the strategy of a juxtaposition with the size and style of the motorbike and little boy. The perspective and eye level also have a major effect on the wihi, where the level that our eyes sit at makes it look as though we are looking into the wheels, almost a "thrown under the bus feeling."  The wihi/feelings the group got from this were danger, vulnerability and drama. The colour contrast also adds to this with the black and white and then the yellow standing out- yellow correlating with road signs and this sense of urgency and danger.

Notes: We found that they used a strategy of Parody, where the poster is playful, refreshing and humorous. The ihi seems to be creating something that is loving, light hearted and playful- shown through a very childish design- which can also be seen as a juxtaposition with the subject matter.

Notes: The strategy used here can be satire or subversion. The colours used are very somber, black and white- which provides a generalisation, this poster can speak to a wide audience of any race because of this. Obviously the target audience is woman. However the woman is not sexualised in any way like we are used to, it is very serious and almost morgue/hospital like from the way that the photo is cropped. You get a sense that it could be talking about abortion. The dark undertones give off a literal sense of dark undertones in the message itself. You get a sense of the concept of ownership of your body, agency of a womans body- individual vs government. The ihi presented is politocal, femenism issues of the woman. Very cold shot which gives off serious vibes, the "restricted area" also gives urgency (wihi).

Notes: The strategy used here could be subversion- the way in which the face is manipulated/multiplied. Not a typical subversion but can be a version of. The black and white creates and oldschool feel which gives of vibes of "a tale as old as time" kind of thing. Very traditional set out-everything centered.  The ihi is trying to persuade people to take this drug to stop drinking alcohol. The feelings we got from it were loneness and it was very authoritative.  There is also a juxtaposition of meaning, where the hand to mouth could just be the man taking the pill and washing it down with water, rather than the initial meaning we all thought, of the man being distorted within a glass of alcohol.

Notes: The strategy used here is homage. Very simple piano keys, where a lot of blank space is left for thought. This makes more sense when you read the fine print and it says world trade centre and then we automatically associated the two black keys with the two twin towers. The piano gives a feel of classical, classiness, which is dressing up a tragic event. The date of the piano concept is also september 11 @ 9.00 which also is very relevant. The black of the keys can symbolise death too. The fact that it is  photograph that seems to be quite un edited gives seriousness to the poster too, which gives an urgency and seriousness to the subject too.
